From 8th January 2025, significant changes are being introduced for travellers entering or transiting through the United Kingdom. The new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system will become mandatory for many visitors, aiming to streamline entry processes and enhance border security.
Who Needs an ETA and When?
- From 8th January 2025: Non-European travellers from countries including the U.S., Canada, Australia, Mexico, and many more will be required to obtain an ETA before entering the UK.
- From 2nd April 2025: The requirement will extend to eligible European travellers, who will also need an ETA to visit the UK.
- Transit Passengers: Even if you’re just passing through the UK on your way to another destination, you’ll need a valid ETA.
How to Apply for an ETA
The ETA application process is designed to be quick and straightforward. Travellers are encouraged to use the official UK ETA app for a seamless experience. Applications can also be submitted via the official UK Government website:
What Does This Mean for Travellers?
The introduction of the ETA means that all eligible travellers must plan ahead and ensure they have the proper documentation before their trip. Failure to secure an ETA in advance could result in delays or denied entry.
